Sam does not believe it, and is in shock. He sees the beginning of the destruction in a nuclear war. He watches for a rocket carrying customers, but instead sees the Earth change and catch fire. They tell him that "tonight is the night". After several shots are fired by Parkhill, the Martian's leader gives him one hundred thousand miles of territory. When he is making his hot dog stand, a Martian arrives with a message, but Parkhill shoots him, believing that he was reaching for a gun. After settlement begins in earnest, he leaves the military and opens a hot dog stand just in time for Mars to be evacuated. He enjoys shooting out the windows of Martian ruins, for which Captain Wilder knocks out his teeth. He is eager to conquer the Martian landscape. Sam Parkhill A member of the fourth expedition, Parkhill is the opposite of Spender.
He explains that the Martians stopped where humans should have stopped a hundred years ago. Spender calls himself "the last Martian".
He speaks for a long time to Wilder of how impossible it will be to protect Mars from government and corporate interests. He kills several, including Cheroke, but doesn't have the heart to finish. Finally, he decides that he should kill off the crew in an effort to preserve Mars. He reveres Mars and quickly leaves the crew to explore the planet by himself. Jeff Spender Spender is the archaeologist for the fourth expedition. He returns to a desolated Mars, where he finds Hathaway living with a family of robots. For this reason, Parkhill thinks, Wilder is sent off to explore Jupiter and Pluto.
He half-agrees with Spender, and after his death tries to help preserve Mars. Wilder has a conversation with Spender about his actions, and realizes that based on his opinions, he is like Spender, except he thinks before he shoots.
He wants to let his men relax and have a party, yet he understands why Spender wishes they would be more dignified. Captain Wilder Wilder is a good leader, the captain of the fourth expedition.
